Affirmations are good, this is better

Four simple steps to real self-love. 

Most of us already know the power of affirmations. When you cultivate yourself with affirmations, good intentions and uplifting thoughts, it can have a positive effect on your mindset - but if that is the ONLY thing you’re doing, it can feel more like subjecting yourself to a propaganda campaign than experiencing a true self-communion. 

At the Sports Model Project - we like to take things a step further. We’ve never been the types to just do what everyone else is doing, and decide that’s good enough. We’re the hardest worker in the room - we do what others can’t do. 

Embracing yourself fully is essential, if you’re going to cultivate the mindset you need to achieve extraordinary things. You need to go way beyond affirmations, and instead take action to achieve a long lasting, compassionate communion with yourself

But how can you skilfully communicate with each and every part of yourself?

They are borrowed from the great book called Sandtalk by Tyson Yunkaporta.

Step one:  Respect.

Respect the fact that sometimes, you have conflicting thoughts and feelings. (And this is completely okay.  Feelings are always valid. How we respond to and act on those feelings is always within our power.)

Give each of your thoughts the space to be heard and potentially understood. Give each of your emotions the chance  to be felt and further explored. After all, your emotions are your emotions. Your thoughts are your thoughts. They are a part of you.  By treating your thoughts and feelings with respect, you encourage oneness with yourself. 

Step two: Connect.

Compassionately opening to your thoughts and emotions is a way to connect with yourself. We often have the urge to shy away from certain emotions and thoughts - but when you have the strength to choose to connect, instead, you then give your thoughts and emotions the opportunity to be really acknowledged and listened to. You allow yourself to know where they come from and to know them better - from there, you create a room for compassion and connection.

Step three: Reflect.

Take a look at what everything you have experienced thus far means to you. Untangle your observations. What are you going to do with all that gained information? What realisations have come into mind after connecting yourself with your thoughts and emotions? Being able to process your observations, experiences, and realisations with respect, and connecting with your thoughts and emotions gives you a more holistic, nuanced, and wise way to move forward.

Step four: Direct.

Now that you have taken into account all the wisdom you have discovered, think of how to proceed skillfully. This is how you master building a strong, purposeful relationship with yourself. This is how you master cultivating a loving and long lasting communion with yourself.

You don’t have to do this alone - in fact, it’s better if you don’t. With the right support around you, you can focus on what’s really important - and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
