It’s one of the greatest philosophies of the Stoics: the obstacle is the way – a powerful reminder for us when we face a challenge. And maybe that challenge can be our way to growth.
And this is true when we run into a busy mind during our meditation that can often deter us.
So how come the obstacle is the way in that sense?
The fact that you are noticing that your mind is busy is actually the practice of meditation. It’s one of the insights that we get during meditation.
So what should we do to use that obstacle as our way?
What technique can we use to quiet the noise in our mind?
We don’t ignore them.
Rather than to push our thoughts away,
Rather than to settle those thoughts down,
Rather than waiting semi-patiently for our mind to be quiet,
We can move into those thoughts.
We acknowledge those thoughts and observe what they are serving us.
Learn to pay deep attention to those thoughts and your relationship with them by listening to them.
They are calling upon you.
And they will keep knocking on your door when you don’t welcome them.
Because being able to find a shore of stillness to sit on and watch the waves of turbulence?
Being able to be a silent observer of your own noise?
That’s the practice of meditation.
That’s the practice of self-mastery.
