The worst time to start a new habit is the new year

“The end of the year is near”
“The holidays are coming”
“I can give myself just a little bit more leeway with my current habits”

I’ll start in the new year.
That’s reasonable!
It’s a good kick-off for the new year.”

That’s cool. Yes, it’s a nice plan, but, do you not get déjà vu saying that to yourself?

Because that’s the same thing you said last year!
And the year before!

So here’s the thing:
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to relax and be present with your family over the break.

But — what if you could have your cake (pudding?) and eat it too?
Because if you’re looking to start a new habit and take things to the next level — actually the best time to start is right now.

(Amid holidays? Yes. Exactly.)

And the worst time is the new year.

Why?

Because you will only get busier!

You will be back to work.

Kids will be back to school.
Commitments start to ramp up again.

You have to wake up at 5 am again to cook and prepare breakfast.

Then go home at 5 pm, prepare dinner and get the kids to sleep.

Then wake up early again the next morning.

Repeat.

So you end up pushing your plans tomorrow, next week, next month until once again, another year has gone with the wind.

Remember, building new habits takes time.

But being disciplined is not a form of punishment.

Treat it as an investment.  One that compounds over time.

If you started yesterday, you would have earned something today!
So if you stay consistent, that habit will continue to build up and build up AND compound.

And what happens if a good habit builds up? It becomes easier. You’ll be able to manage your time better. It becomes a part of your routine.

And what about if it compounds? Epic.
It will become natural to you. It becomes automatic.
It becomes a part of your system.
It becomes a part of YOUR identity.

So you start now, earn that habit until it develops as your daily routine.

Because believe it or not, the time you need the most support is over the holidays.
And no, we’re not going to be the grinch and tell you to not have fun or “relax”.
Nor are we going to tell you to train on xmas day and “burn off the extra calories”

Because both of those ideas are extreme.
Personal mastery lives in the middle.

And that’s what The Sports Model Project is all about.
